High cholesterol and blood pressure

Lipids and blood pressure move on cooking oil, salt and fibre.

Statins are your physician's decision. What we change is the oil in your kitchen, the salt you cannot see, the fibre you are missing and the weight around your middle. Most lipid panels shift within three months.

What the numbers mean

It is not one number. It is the ratio, the triglycerides and the pressure together.

Total cholesterol on its own tells you very little. What matters is LDL, HDL, triglycerides and how they sit against each other, alongside your blood pressure and your waist.

Triglycerides respond fastest to food, often within weeks. LDL is slower and partly genetic, which is why medication is sometimes the right answer. That decision belongs to your physician. Everything on the plate belongs to us.

What clients arrive with

If three of these sound familiar, you are in the right place.

A lipid profile flagged in red at a company health check

Triglycerides well above range, LDL borderline

Blood pressure creeping up at every visit

Offered a statin and wanting to try food first

Already on medication and the numbers still are not right

A family history of heart disease that worries you

Switched to a fancy oil and seen no change

Eating out or travelling for work most weeks

Triglycerides answer to sugar and refined carbohydrate more than to fat. That is where the plan starts.

How the plan works

Four things we change, in this order.

First

Oil, quantity and kind

A monthly oil budget for the household, measured, and the right oils for the way you actually cook.

Second

Sugar and refined carbs

Triglycerides fall fastest when bakery, sweets and cold drinks go. This does more than cutting ghee.

Third

Fibre and hidden salt

Soluble fibre at every meal, and the papad, pickle, namkeen and packaged salt you are not counting.

Fourth

Walking and weight

Daily walking and a few kilos off the waist move HDL and blood pressure together.

What we track

Full lipid profile every three months
Home blood pressure readings, twice a week
Fasting glucose, HbA1c and liver enzymes
Waist measurement and body composition
Monthly cooking oil use for the household

Foods people ask about

Ghee: stays, measured, not banned
Eggs: stay, including the yolk for most people
Nuts: yes, a fixed handful, not a bowl
Coconut oil: fine in small amounts, not a health food
Garlic capsules and cholesterol teas: not worth the money

Questions we get asked

Cholesterol, answered plainly.

Can I avoid starting a statin?

Sometimes, when the main problem is triglycerides and weight. When LDL is high and largely genetic, medication is the safer route. Your physician decides, with better numbers in front of them.

Do I have to stop ghee and eggs?

No. Both stay in measured amounts. Sugar, refined flour and fried food matter far more for most people.

Which cooking oil is best?

Less matters than how much. We usually settle on two oils for different jobs and a fixed monthly quantity.

How fast do lipids change?

Triglycerides often move within six to eight weeks. LDL takes three months or more to show a real trend.

Will you manage my blood pressure medication?

No. That stays with your physician. We reduce the salt and the weight driving it and share your readings.

Can I do this from outside India?

Yes. Send your lipid profile and a fortnight of home readings and we work on video.

Riddhi's note

Everyone arrives ready to give up ghee and nobody arrives ready to give up the evening biscuits. For most of my clients the second one is what the report was actually about.
